Fishery Analyst

Fishery Analyst is an ArcGIS 9.x and 10 application developed to effectively analyze and visualize temporal and spatial patterns of fishery dynamics. The main functions are quantitative estimation and visualization of catch and effort and their variation in space and time, analysis of fishing vessel utilization, data quality control, and deriving information on the location of important economic and threatened species. The application provides a user-friendly analysis interface allowing for easy and diverse output production. The interface allows the user to choose the analysis to perform (effort, catch density, catch per unit of effort etc) and to select data on criteria such as year, vessel name and/or size, and fish species caught. The output can be generated as yearly, monthly, quarterly or user-defined date interval plots. Results can be plotted in pre-defined map layouts and saved in quantitative GIS data file formats (raster and vector) or as graphic files and times series animations. The application provides an option to produce non-confidential plots for data protected by confidentiality policies.

The Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Center administers scientific research and monitoring programs that support the domestic and international conservation and management of living marine resources. The Fisheries Monitoring and Socioeconomics Division (FMSD) consists of four distinct programs that conduct a wide variety of fisheries monitoring and research in the Pacific Islands Region and surrounding international waters. FMSD's mission is to provide the best available fisheries-dependent data, fishery reporting, technical support, social and economic research, and advice in support of federal fisheries management in the central and western Pacific. The data collected, processed, compiled, analyzed, and provided by FMSD make up a substantial fraction of the foundational fishery statistics and information needed by fishery scientists and managers in the Pacific Islands Region.


National Institute of Acquatic Resources of the Technical University of Denmark

The National Institute of Aquatic Resources of the Technical University of Denmark carries forward studies on all aspects of sustainable and innovative use of fish and shellfish resources. In the area of commercial fisheries, DTU Aqua is researching fisheries management methods, catch technologies, determination of stock sizes, and how fish stocks are influenced by changes in the marine ecosystem. Their research in commercial fisheries is being put into practice in holistic advice to public-sector authorities and industry. This is advice contributing to and enabling sustainable fisheries. DTU Aqua is using Fishery Analyst to study fisheries and stock spatial dynamics dynamics of key commercial species such as harrings, flounders and cod in the North Sea and North Atlantic.

Gulf of Mexico Branch of the Sustainable Fisheries Division, Southeast Regional Office, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) - USA

The Sustainable Fisheries Division, Southeast Regional Office, National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), is entrusted with the conservation, management, and protection of marine fishery resources inhabiting federal waters off the southeastern United States from North Carolina through Texas and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Division is the Region’s focal point for implementing NMFS' primary legislative authority for fisheries management and research, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson-Stevens Act), as amended by the Sustainable Fisheries Act (SFA). The Division works directly with the Region’s three fishery management councils established by Congress to perform the mandates of the Magnuson-Stevens Act. These mandates are accomplished through fishery management plans for marine finfish and invertebrates that support important commercial and recreational fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and Caribbean and consider conservation and management issues, sociological and economic issues, and regulatory issues. The Gulf of Mexico branch is using Fishery Analyst to analyse catch and effort data on red snapper, shrimp, reef fish and spiny lobsters fisheries.

Fishery Analyst at DMWR, American Samoa

Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources - American Samoa

The American Samoa Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR), formerly the Office of Marine Resources, located in Pago Pago on Tutuila, has been collecting commercial fisheries data from the local fleet on Tutuila since the early 1970's and from the Manu'a Islands since 1983. Most data collected over the years have been from the commercial fleet, but beginning in October 1985, DMWR's data collection programs were modified to include data on recreational and subsistence fisheries as well. The Department is using Fishery Analyst to produce plots on the spatial distribution of commercial longline fishery over the years.

University of Campeche - Mexico

Fishery Analyst is being used within the "Programa de Ecología, Pesquerías y Oceanografía del Golfo de México (EPOMEX)" (Program of Ecology, Fisheries and Oceanography for the Gulf of Mexico) of the Autonomous University of Campeche. This initiative came forth due to concern of this University with the problems related to ecology, oceanography and fisheries, not only on the coast of Campeche, but on all the coastal zone of the Gulf of Mexico.


Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, Italy

The Marine Protected Area (MPA) of “Porto Cesareo” established in 1997 is located in the south of Italy in the Puglia Region. It is one of the biggest MPA in Italy (16.654 hectares, 32 km of coast) where 27 MPAs have been instituted till now. The objectives of the MPA are to protect marine habitats of outstanding ecological values such as Posidonia oceanica prairies, marine caves and coralligenous habitats, to regulate recreational and commercial activities within its boundaries, to promote environmental educations and to perform scientific research. The MPA strictly collaborates with the Laboratory of Marine Biology of the University of Salento to develop programs to gather a better understanding of the ecological processes regulating biodiversity within the area, and to assess and monitor the health of marine habitats and the impact of human activities. Data are being collected and analysed using a Geographic Information System. In particular the acquisition, management and analysis of GIS data are implemented using ESRI ArcGIS desktop software with the custom applications Fishery Analyst and PANDA.

Fishery Analyst is being used by the MPA for the analysis and the management of fishing activities and the idea is to expand its use to map all the human activities present in this area. The analysis and the representation of spatially explicit models of the fishing effort together with the analysis of its temporal distribution is critical for the monitoring of the areas more intensely harvested, also considering fishing tools selectivity. These information are also crucial for the governance of the MPA, allowing to localize potentially overfished areas and set appropriate ad hoc regulations.

The National Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Poland

The NMFRI mission is to advance the capacity of science to provide advice on human activities affecting and affected by marine ecosystems. The components of the NMFRI mission are: to establish effective paths for providing scientific advice to the Polish fishery administration, the EU Commission, and relevant international organizations; to perform and promote physical, chemical, biological, and interdisciplinary research of the marine environment; to perform and promote research in the fields of processing technology, marine foodstuff safety, fishery economics, and fishery technology; to foster public awareness of wide-ranging topics on the functioning and rational utilization of marine ecosystems with special emphasis on sustainable fisheries and the ecosystem approach to fisheries management issues. The main research interests of the NMFRI include disciplines that enable an ecosystem approach to fisheries management, i.e., marine ecology, marine chemistry, fishing gear technology, and fishery economics.
